dryer rackI’m not saying I’m a princess, although I have been accused of it many times in my life. However, there is definitely a major appliance I am going to manifest while here in the United Kingdom: A Clothes Dryer!  Nothing feels better than fresh hot towels out of the dryer.  I’ll miss that feeling until my new dryer arrives (Feel free to see me getting a new dryer soon).

Tonight, I had the luxury of washing my clothes in a washing machine, and at the end of the cycle I’m used to popping them into a dryer. Not this Sunday evening. I get to dry my clothes on a drying rack by the window, which I guess is very common here in the UK.   So, tomorrow I will have crisp (literally) fresh clothes ready to hang.  I hear rumor that it takes an evening to dry.  No more procrastinating to do laundry here in England!

Oh, and it’s vocabulary lesson time again.  I just love learning the new words here.  Today I went to the local convenient store (about as big as a 7-11) and purchased some cookies.  Cookies are called “buscuits” here in the UK.  On my way out of the store receiving my change (that’s another blog….money) the gentleman said “Cheers” which I guess is a informal greeting of what the people in the USA would say “Have a good day.”   Finally, to end our vocab lesson for the day.  In the USA “chips” are considered “potato chips.”  In the UK chips are considered french fries, and potato chips are called “crisps” in the UK.  This concludes todays daily vocab lesson.

All is going well.  I’m still falling asleep way past the am, and waking up in the afternoon.  Oh well….like one of my dear friends says “you’re there for 6 months Shannon…who cares about jet lag.”

Tomorrow, I’m beginning a new exercise regimen in the park.  I was thinking of starting to run again, but hey I’m only thinking about that at the moment.  We’ll see how I feel tomorrow.  Until then, I’m saving money on dryer sheets!

    If it helps …

When we first moved to Italy, we lived in the hotel for 4 1/2 months. (Long story involving strikes and miscommunications.) In the bathroom, of course, was a bidet. My mother, not knowing what it was for, would handwash clothes in it before hanging them on a line strung across the balcony. The maid walked in one day & caught her doing that and just about died on the spot! “No, signora! No!” She explained to my mother in very broken English what the bidet was for.

Okay Shannon- First, I love the vocab lesson- keep them coming! When I was 23 I spent the summer in Europe and I met a group of girls from Australia. I was telling them a story about something that had just happened to me- and I said, “I am so pissed…( meaning angry..) They all looked at me with confused stares until I asked- “What did I say?” And they all said, isn’t it a little early? (We were sitting at breakfast.) I realized to them “pissed” meant “drunk!” Anyway- I will certainly visualize you with a dryer. Who know- maybe you might change your mind and decide you like your clothes crinkly. Stranger things have happened!
